Transportation: How To Check What Zones You Will Travel Through During a Journey

Artwork by DIS Student Illustrator Malini Basu

For all DIS Copenhagen students using the DSB app to travel on public transportation while in Copenhagen commuting for various types of DIS-related travel, you will need to know how to check what zones you will need between two destinations. You’ll also want to know how to obtain this information for your own personal travel!

Note that whether you have a Commuter Card paid for by DIS, or are traveling on a single ticket for DIS-related travel, any fines you receive are at your own cost and DIS is not responsible for reimbursement. Failure to present a valid ticket for the zone you are traveling in can result in a 1000 DKK fine if you are checked.

So, throughout your semester of commuting around Copenhagen, stay on top of your zones. To check what zones you will travel through during a journey, you can use a helpful website called Journey Planner (Rejseplanen) that helps you plan your travel route–specifying the exact zones you will travel in from point A to point B – and has both a web browser and an app version. Scroll down for instructions for both methods.

Method #1: Checking Transportation Zones using the Rejseplanen Web Browser

  1. Open a web browser and go to Journey Planner (Rejseplanen)‘s website
  2. Type in your starting location in A and your destination in B. Select ‘Find’
  3. Under the journey you want to take (i.e. your preferred mode(s) of transportation), select ‘Price & buy’

4. The screen will show a section with the header ‘The trip consists of the following ticket(s).’ Click on the journey listed below, which shows the starting location, destination, and price

5. Select any of the options where it says ‘Show zones and details’

6. The required zones for your journey will appear under ‘Zones you travel in’

If you would like to use your Commuter Card for this journey, be sure to cross-reference these zones against the ones on your Commuter Card. If these zones are included in your Commuter Card, you are free to take this route. If not, you will need to buy a single-ride ticket or a one-zone extension ticket:

Method #2: Checking Transportation Zones Using the Rejseplanen App on Your Smartphone

  1. Download the Journey Planner (Rejseplanen) app on Google Play or the App Store
  2. Open the Rejseplanen app
  3. Type in your starting location in A and your destination in B. Select ‘Search’

4. Click on the journey you want to take (i.e. your preferred mode(s) of transportation)
5. Select ‘Price & buy’

6. Below the text ‘The trip consists of the following ticket(s),’ select the journey

7. On the next screen, select ‘Show zones and details’

8. The zones required for this journey will appear.

If you would like to use your Commuter Card for this journey, be sure to cross-reference these zones against the ones on your Commuter Card. If these zones are included in your Commuter Card, you are free to take this route. If not, you will need to buy a single-ride ticket or a one-zone extension ticket:
