Hi, I’m Oliver! I’m a Furniture Design major from MCAD, the Minneapolis College of Art and Design, and this summer I’ll be studying Furniture Design in Scandinavia, right here in Copenhagen.
This DIS Study Abroad course is in Session 4, which means its six weeks long, with a one week Study Tour to Sweden and Finland – which is what I’m most excited for. We’re going to tour factories and important buildings in the history of design across both countries, with an emphasis on understanding the craft of Scandinavian design – which is why we’ll also be building a chair for the last three weeks of class!
I’ve always been interested in Scandinavian furniture, and when one of my professors mentioned the DIS program late last year, I applied as soon as I could, and long story short, here I am.
The feeling of arriving in Copenhagen was incredibly welcoming, and though I’ve been here for only 5 days, I’m in love with the city. There’s so much to see, and walking around the streets and trails is so relaxing, yet exciting at the same time.
What I’ve been trying to understand for years is the context in which Scandinavian design operates in, and now that I’m learning it by actually living it, I love it. I’m not sure when, but I know that someday I’ll be coming back here for sure.
