Hej Hej!
For those of you new here… I’m Janet Haver. I’m a rising junior at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill majoring in Public Relations. I’ve been studying with DIS for the past three weeks and have been loving every minute of it! After finishing my Session 1 course in Copenhagen, Children with Special Needs, I relocated to Stockholm this week to begin my Session 2 course, Psychology of Political Behavior.
While I’m neither a psychology nor political science major, I’ve always been interested in both fields! At my home university I took both Psychology and Political Science 101 during my first year and thoroughly enjoyed the material. When I saw that this course was available in Stockholm, I knew it was the perfect choice! I wanted to make the most of my study abroad experience, and what better way to do this than to study in not one but TWO CITIES?? Seems like a win-win situation to me!
During Session 2, I will be traveling to Berlin with my professor and classmates to analyze past and present political behavior in Germany. I am incredibly excited to experience a city filled with so much history and to learn from an even wider range of professors!
As I mentioned earlier, I chose to participate in the Mix & Match option through DIS to ensure I could make the most of my six weeks abroad! I wanted to take in as much of Scandinavia as I possibly could in such a short period of time. In addition to living in two incredible cities, I have been introduced to a wide range of people and professors who have undoubtedly influenced this experience!
While I’ve only been exploring Stockholm for one week, the city is much different than Copenhagen (in good ways)! First of all, Stockholm is HUGE relative to Copenhagen. Navigating all of the different transportation options throughout the city has definitely been a struggle, but it’s slowly becoming easier! Also, using a bicycle as transportation isn’t nearly as common as it is in Copenhagen, which means the Metro and city buses are packed during the morning commute to class. I’m definitely gaining calf muscle trying to keep from sliding around and bumping into people… so that’s a plus!
During my time in Stockholm, I’m hoping to take in all the top tourist attractions, some of which I’ve been able to do in this first week! I explored the Royal Palace and the Vasa Museum – both amazing sites! For the weeks to come, I’m hoping to uncover the best places for panoramic views of the city to watch the sunset… well watch the sun try to set at least. That’s the other difference between Copenhagen and Stockholm; the sun never sets here! But who can complain? Well… I can when I’m awake at 3:00 a.m., but that’s a story for another time.
I am really excited to be continuing my study abroad experience in Stockholm for these next three weeks and can’t wait to share them!
