”Life itself is the most wonderful fairy tale.” I find H.C. Andersen’s quote resonates with me more and more as I further experience Copenhagen and Denmark. Going abroad has made me appreciate being a tourist and not taking for granted the things in your own backyard. Copenhagen has felt like home since I landed just four short weeks ago, but at the same time I had so many new things to see, do, and try. Now, I have only two things left on my bucket list: see the little mermaid and spend a day biking. The Little Mermaid statue is known as a Copenhagen icon and I know I can’t leave without taking a picture with one of Copenhagen’s classic tourist attractions. Cycling hasn’t been necessary to commute because I take a bus into the city every day, but I would feel very inauthentic if I didn’t spend a day exploring by bike and trying to fit into the fast paced bike lane.
Last week, I crossed two big items off my bucket list: Tivoli and Louisiana. I pass Tivoli twice a day to my bus stop and have been dying to see for myself what is behind the tall fences lining the block (other than the massive swings). The inside is much bigger than it seems from the outside and is packed with food, games, rides, and a theater. My kollegium went on a Friday to see the concert (Jessie J!) and had a blast. The day before, I took the train to the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art where there are exhibits for everyone from sculptures to photography to paintings and more. The Louisiana is located a couple miles North of Copenhagen on the Baltic Sea and the views from the café are enough to make the trip worth it. It is hard to believe my long list is almost complete and I can’t say I’ll be happy to cross off my last item because it is just another reminder that my time here is sadly coming to a close.
