Why Copenhagen?

Imagine a city where the wonders of nature and the charms of urban living coexist in perfect harmony. Copenhagen, nestled on the shores of the Baltic Sea, is a true haven for nature enthusiasts. Its lush parks, serene canals, and unwavering commitment to environmental consciousness have captured my heart, even in my first week here.

Hi, everyone! I’m Sophia, a rising junior at Bates College, and I couldn’t be more thrilled to share my experiences of discovering Copenhagen’s unique allure. I am currently taking the Session 2 course European Biodiversity with a Study Tour to southern Sweden for my first session and then Arctic Ecology with a study tour in Svalbard in Session 3!

As a biology major, my main goal was to find a program that would allow me to immerse myself in the great outdoors and engage in hands-on scientific exploration. Coming from Oregon and studying in Maine, I’ve grown accustomed to what some refer to as the “crunch” or “granola” lifestyle, so I was also longing to experience something more urban. Copenhagen, with its blend of urban excitement and a deep appreciation for sustainable living, presented the perfect opportunity for me to experience the best of both worlds.

Now, you might wonder, why DIS?

Many study abroad programs, especially summer options, tend to be short and confined to a single location. Since I didn’t want to go abroad during the semester, my options felt somewhat limited. However, DIS stood out from the rest. What makes the DIS summer program so exceptional is its flexibility. Not only do we have the chance to embark on week-long Study Tours in other countries, but you can also combine sessions, allowing you to extend our stay beyond the typical three-week duration. It’s the ideal combination for those seeking a comprehensive and immersive summer abroad experience.

In my first week here, I’ve already come to appreciate the Danish concept of hygge (pronounced kind of like “hoo-ga”), which permeates Copenhagen’s way of life. Hygge embodies a feeling of coziness, contentment, and well-being, and you can witness its essence in the city’s inviting cafes, candlelit restaurants, and warm spaces. Though the week has been filled to the brim with activities, meeting new people, and adjusting to our classes, the relaxed pace of the lifestyle has made the transition seamless.

So, get ready to pack your bags, embrace the hygge lifestyle, and join me on this incredible journey as we delve into the Danish culture and unravel the enchantments of Copenhagen. There’s so much to explore, and I can’t wait to share it all with you!
