Mulled Wine

Gløgg is one of the classic smells of the season and can be served
any time leading up to Christmas day. In Denmark and Sweden, you will often find
it served at outdoor Christmas markets as well as at house parties and
cafés. It is a hyggeligt way to say skål with a friend over a warm drink!

Mulled Wine (Gløgg)

Serves 4 to 6
1 (750 ml) bottle fruity red wine
Rind of 1 orange
2 cinnamon sticks
1/2 cup raisins
1/2 cup slivered almonds
10 cardamom pods, lightly crushed
5 whole cloves
3 star anise
1/4 cup honey
1 cup ruby port
1 cup brandy

In a medium saucepan over medium heat, combine the wine,
orange rind, cinnamon sticks, raisins, almonds, cardamom pods,
cloves, and honey. Adjust the heat so the mixture does not boil.
Allow the mixture to barely simmer for at least 30 minutes. Add
the port and brandy.

To Serve

Ladle into mugs and serve with a small spoon long enough to
reach the almonds and raisins from the bottom of the mug.
