Advice from a Local Swede on Stockholm

Hi!

My name is Simone and I was born and raised in Stockholm. I have been studying in Stockholm for 3 years now. Living in Stockholm is not so wallet-friendly for a student so I have collected my best tips for fun and cheap experiences in the city. Hope you enjoy!

Summer activities outside:

Stockholm Film Festival – For 5 days in August, the Stockholm Film Festival screens movies under the stars in Rålabshovsparken. Check out their website for more information. Click here for more details.

Smaka På Stockholm (A taste of Stockholm) – Smaka på Stockholm is an early summer food festival in Stockholm.  The festival is free to enter, you only have to pay to taste the food or drinks being served.

Stockholm Pride Parade – The Stockholm Pride Parade is Scandinavia’s biggest pride parade. The parade walks through central Stockholm and it is the Pride Festival’s biggest event. Click here to see the Pride schedule in Stockholm!

Work out for free at any of Stockholm’s outside gyms – Stockholm has many outside gyms, instead of paying for a membership at a gym; try out the outside gyms. As I’m sure you’ve gathered, they are more popular during the summer.

Swim at any of Stockholm’s city beaches – Stockholm is surrounded by water, which means you can  take a swim almost anywhere. Find out where you can take a swim here.

Going from one place to another:

Are you tired of walking around the city all day and admiring the buildings in Stockholm? Instead of taking the bus or subway, take the boat. You can look at SL’s “pendelbåtar” to see where you can go.

Gardens:

Bergianska trädgården – Stockholm’s botanical garden. Take a coffee break in ”Gamla orangeriet” or bring your own coffee and enjoy in the park. Click here to check out their website.

Art:

Free museums – Some of the museums in Stockholm offer free admission. Check out their websites to see what days of the week they are free. Snösätra – Snösätra is a graffiti exhibition, where both Swedish as well as international artists paint, located in an industrial area in south of Stockholm and is active all-year-round.
