Art in Copenhagen

While Copenhagen does not have the same reputation for art as say Paris or Florence, there is a lot of fantastic art to be found here. Over the past weekend, I visited two of the more well known Danish art museums, and I have to say I was absolutely blown away.

Located just a few minutes from DIS, the Glypoteket is a museum dedicated to 18th century sculpture that also contains collections of ancient Egyptian, Roman, and Greek sculptures as well as paintings from Masters such as Picasso and Cezanne. Everything in the museum is stunningly beautiful, and the open garden in the center gives you a chance to relax from walking around.

While very much rooted in the past, the curation of the Glypoteket does a good job of encouraging contemporary interpretations as well as explaining the historical context.

A short train ride from Copenhagen’s central station takes you to the world renowned Louisiana Museum of Modern Art. Here you will find hypnotically beautiful works by contemporary video artist Pippilotti Rist as the current feature. Her work was so dazzling and beautiful that it feels like walking through a dream. Alongside Rist, there is a large collection of 20th century art by legends such as Giacometti, Kandinsky, Guston, Warhol, and many others. I was particularly drawn to Dea Mørch, a Danish artist who explores both political and personal messages.

Whether your taste in art is for the classical, or more contemporary like myself, I strongly suggest visiting both of these museums. Where the collection at Glypoteket starts in the Classical period and ends with Picasso, the collection at Louisiana starts with Picasso and ends with today. So by visiting both museums you get an experience that is both focused and comprehensive, which is a rare treat indeed.
